piqlFilm: Making Your Data Immortal
Welcome to our section on piqlFilm, the revolutionary storage medium designed for ultra-secure, long-term digital preservation.
In an age where digital data is constantly at risk of obsolescence, hardware failure, and cyber-attacks, piqlFilm offers an immutable, physical backup solution that is guaranteed to last for over 1,000 years.
What is piqlFilm?
piqlFilm is a specialized, high-resolution 35mm photosensitive silver-halide film (similar to archival motion picture film) that acts as a physical, digital backup medium. It combines proven archival-grade film longevity with cutting-edge digital encoding technology to create a storage solution that is:
- Migration-Free: It eliminates the constant need to move data to new hardware formats every few years (a process that carries a high risk of data loss).
- Technology-Independent: The information is self-contained. The film includes human-readable instructions and open-source data to recreate the reading technology, ensuring the data is retrievable regardless of future technological standards.
- WORM (Write-Once-Read-Many): Once the data is recorded, it is immutable (cannot be altered, deleted, or manipulated), ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the archived information.
How is Digital Data Stored on Film?
piqlFilm converts your digital files into a physical, analogue format using a proprietary process:
- Encoding: Your digital data (databases, documents, images, video, audio) is first prepared. It is split into frames, and a powerful Forward Error Correction code is applied to ensure data restoration even if the film suffers minor physical damage.
- Recording: A device called the piqlWriter then uses photons to encode the binary data onto the film at a microscopic, high resolution (1180 line pairs per mm). This data is often recorded as super-high-resolution QR codes.
- Physical Medium: The film is an ultra-stable PET (polyethylene terephthalate) base coated with a gelatine emulsion containing nano silver-halides.
- Format: A single piqlFilm reel is approximately 1 kilometer long and has a storage capacity of up to 120 GB. Data can be stored in pure digital (QR code) form, a visual (human-readable image) form, or a hybrid of both.
